How to Know If ChatGPT Cites Your Website

A practical method to test whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI understand your site, mention your brand, and cite the right pages.

Search Console tells you how Google sees your pages. It does not tell you whether ChatGPT can explain what you do, compare you to alternatives, or cite your site when a buyer asks a question. That gap is what AI visibility testing is for.

Test real buyer prompts

Do not start with your brand name. Start with the question a buyer would ask before knowing you exist: best tool for a use case, how to solve a problem, alternative to a known product, or checklist for a job.

Run the same prompts in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI. Save the answer, the brands mentioned, the cited sources, and the language used to describe each option.

  • Does the assistant mention your brand without help?
  • Does it cite a page from your site?
  • Does it describe your product accurately?
  • Does it cite competitors instead of you?

Separate mention, citation and understanding

A mention is not a citation. ChatGPT can know your brand name but cite another source. It can also cite your page while misunderstanding your positioning. Track those three signals separately.

The strongest signal is a sourced answer that mentions your site, links to a relevant page, and explains the use case in terms your buyer would recognize.

Fix pages before publishing more

If AI answers miss you, the first fix is not always a new article. Strengthen the pages that already exist: direct answer at the top, clear product category, concrete examples, FAQ schema, comparison language, and internal links from related pages.

New articles help when a real prompt has no matching page. Otherwise, improve the page that should have been cited and test the prompt again one week later.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see if ChatGPT cites my website?

Yes, by testing buyer prompts and tracking mentions, citations, URLs, and answer quality across AI engines. The result is not a fixed ranking, but it shows whether your site is visible and understandable.

What should I do if AI tools cite competitors instead?

Identify which pages they cite, then improve your competing page with a clearer answer, stronger proof, FAQ schema, and internal links. Publish a new article only when your site lacks a page for that intent.
